Clements, whose last performance was February 4, 2005 in Jamestown, New York, died on August 16, 2005, aged 77, of lung cancer. Clements was impressed with his playing. In 1972 he was featured on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's hit album Will the Circle Be Unbroken, which helped establish him as a country and bluegrass star.
