The Health Benefits of Fasting, Good or Bad?

Itt sounds so simple – for an entire day you won’t eat a thing.

No calories, you won’t have to cook either and you’ll burn weight automatically.

But is fasting healthy? And you can use fasting as a strategy to lose weight?

Introduction

There are certainly conflicting reports on this matter.

You would think when you have a day where you won’t eat a thing, you will automatically slow basal metabolism. However, this is not correct!

Fasting does not have an immediate negative impact on your metabolism.

In fact, a study done at the University of Rochester shows that you will only slow metabolism after fasting for 60 hours.

And the delay is only 8%. The study showed that your metabolism is not slowed, but rather accelerates rapidly after 36 to 48 hours.

The feeling of real starvation will occur after approximately three days without food.

What happens is that your body will convert protein into glucose. And the No. 1 source of protein are your muscles in this case.

Until then, your body uses primarily glycogen (stocked in the liver and muscles) and body fat. Your body will not break down proteins at all and does so only as a last resort for energy.

The negative effects only come in effect when you are fasting for a long time.

Interesting to know is that fasting promotes insulin sensitivity, you can cope better with stress, fat will burn more easily and may even extend your life!

Many of the processed foods that we consume daily are packed with artificial sweeteners and harmful additives. Many of these additives are stored in the fat tissue.

When fasting, you can burn fat and reduce the amount of toxins in your body.

Fasting is good for your digestion

When you fast your digestive system has to do less work. Of course it does not stop, but it is still minimal.

Fasting helps with certain addictions

When you adopt a conscious and healthy way of living. Then you’ll start to notice that you are unlikely again to adopt unhealthy habits and addictions. This also helps in other addictions, such as nicotine, sugar, alcohol etc.

The health benefits of fasting is consistent with the findings of the calorie restrictive diet.

Disclaimer: A low-calorie diet is only beneficial if you get enough of the right nutrients, this is not for everyone.

Now I must say that you have to adhere to certain rules before you begin.

It is wise to work with a ‘fast food’ strategy.

You can fast 16 to 20 hours and then over a period of 4 to 8 hours you make sure you get enough micro and macronutrients.

The idea is that you have enough calories and nutrients get for the whole day, this may mean that you have to prepare some great meals.

The Risks of Fasting

It is not possible for everyone to go and start with fasting. Let me just explain it: Fasting should not be seen as a ” fast track ” to lose weight. The base must be good and fasting is rather an addition to an already healthy diet.

Fasting is not recommended for pregnant women, children and certain health conditions.

The health benefits of fasting show that we need to think differently about food. It’s not that we hunger anyway to prevent.

Often we are programmed to eat at certain times and for certain quantities. In addition, we have rather too many than too few calories.

If you eat only crackers, cereal, bread or rice cakes, your body converts the carbohydrates into simple sugars and it comes directly into your bloodstream.

In response to the next sugar rush your body will produce extra insulin, which helps your body to absorb the sugars as soon as possible.

The problem: You end up with a low blood sugar and hunger.

You are then tempted to reach for sugar-rich products without nutritional value, to meet the need for immediate energy. A bad idea that leads to bad continuous habits

Now it is not true that carbohydrates are completely off-limits. But grab snacks that have a combination of carbohydrates, healthy fats and proteins. These will take longer to digest and therefore this your hunger will be more satisfied.

For instance, try snacking on a slice of bread with peanut butter or whole grain crackers with low-fat cheese.

Personally, I find it quite boring to run for 30 or 40 min in the gym.

When doing this. I always try to listen to music that is relaxing, so that my thoughts will have a free run by themselves.

However when I finish my running session and want to do some core-body exercises. I find it more stimulating for myself to listen to energetic music.

So the best run song would differ for different kinds of exercise.

So what is the best motivational workout music.

That all depends on your own preference.

You should ask yourself the question, what music do you like to listen to when you are working.

That would probably be the same music that is motivational for you. It can be anything. Ranging from a speech, audiobook, music genre or artist.

We all have our own preferences and each kind of music gives us a different vibe.

Important however is to have the right motivational workout music that gives us more energy.

The music that works out for me is accordingly to my own preferences. I like to listen to Spanish songs!

Why, think of when you are dancing salsa or the flamenco.

The pace is always on a proper or high level. These kinds of music give me a certain feeling and reminds me of my vacations in Spain and Mexico.

Therefore, I like to listen to these kinds of music as it has a certain sentimental value for me and gives me a hack of a energy level.

It helps a lot to have a constant level during your workout. Or if you want to vary, you can choose for a faster or slower pace. When you are listening to your favorite music, it is quite tempting to put the volume on maximum level.

However, it is not scientifically proven that louder music leads to better results when exercising/running. It is important to realize that you can damage your ears with this.

Especially when you are having a longer workout, you will have more endorphins released and this will lead to the fact that you actually don’t care how loud the music is and at this level you are damaging your own ears.

I would recommend to start at a normal level of sound.

A good indication is that when somebody is standing next to you, he or she shouldn’t be able to hear the music you are listening to via your earphones or headphones.

If that’s the case, you need to turn down the volume for your own sake.

So we came to the conclusion that music plays a very important role with workouts, it motivates and you enjoy it, so you will last longer when working out or are running.

I always enjoy making soup and when my friends come over, they are usually always stunned that they always get some soup.

In a way it shocked me to know that they didn’t know the benefits of soup. While the benefits of soup are so good,

I thought it a good reason to share my knowledge and explain all the benefits of soup.

Soup is a very easy way to eat vegetables.

How many vegetables you eat over a bowl of soup is of course highly dependent on what you do in your soup.

A pan with 600 grams of vegetables on a liter of water for four people, you provide about 150 grams of vegetables.

Then you are already a long way for the recommended 250 grams.

With a cup of soup not only come easier to the recommended daily amount of vegetables: it also helps in keeping your hydration maintained.

A serving of soup has to be 250 milliliters.

There are several reasons why a healthy breakfast is so important for weight loss.

But what ingredients do you actually need?

Therefore, the following foods are great for a healthy breakfast:

  • Oatmeal

How a healthy breakfast looks like? One of my favorite recipes:

Porridge with banana and cinnamon

  • A cup of oatmeal
  • 250 ml of milk (or water)
  • 1 banana
  • Cinnamon
  • Chia seeds

Pour the milk into a pan and bring it to boil.

Add the contents of the cup with oatmeal after a while. Cut the banana into pieces and also add it directly.

Let it cook for a few minutes until the porridge has the desired thickness.

Then add cinnamon to taste and also + 1 tablespoon of chia seeds.

Remove the pan from the stove and let it rest for a few minutes.

This recipe can, of course, be done all kinds of ways.

Milk is in fact usually sweetened with sugar or corn syrup which is unhealthy.

So if it’s hard for you to get “healthy” milk, replace milk with water.

You can also replace the banana for a variety of other fruits such as currants, raspberries, apple or pear.

Chia seeds could replace you for linseed.

Healthy and good food is not only important for professional athletes, even if you are not doing any intensive sport, this can help you to achieve the goals you want to achieve in a much simpler way.

1.What happens in your body when you exercise?

As soon as you begin to intensively move your muscles, your heart and lungs are more active than when they are in idle mode: your muscles will be contracted more and more powerful, your heart beats faster and you begin to breathe faster and heavier.

In addition, your body will perspire more to carry the heat that is released during the exercise, so that your body temperature is not too high.

What you need to know about the Paleo Diet

It is still a very great success: The Paleo diet.

Will this trend stay or will it be forgotten this diet over time, as so many trendy diets.

One of the most recent and very pokiwifruit-400143_960_720pular diets is the Paleo diet.

Time will tell whether it will a very efficient and effective one or one that doesn’t work.

In this article I will explain to you what the diet exactly is and its benefits and its cons.

This because with everything popular around it always has some critical opinion formed about it.

These critical opinions sometimes might be very harsh and be very biased.

This might be due to the fact that the person didn’t had any success with the diet.

Why?

It might the that the diet didn’t fit with the time schedule or for other personal reasons.

Therefore, I would like to discuss in this article the possible advantages and disadvantages of the Paleo diet.

Just what you need to know about the Paleo diet. So that in this way everyone can make his or her own choice.

The Paleo Diet

Introduction: What is the essence of the Paleo Diet?

The principle is to eat like our ancestors ate.

Diseases that we know today didn’t exist at that time.

So the Paleo-diet would ensure that you will not suffer from the diseases we have nowadays.

Think for example of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The whole diet is composed from the idea that the present industrially processed products previously did not exist, so with the Paleo Diet, you will be altogether safe from having these lifestyle diseases.

Another principle also plays a role: Our body needs to adapt to the continues changes in dietary.

In the last thousands of years, particularly the last 100 years, our diet changed rapidly.

And as a result our body has some difficulties with the rapid adjustment.

So when you get your burger at the Mc Drive, you will notice that your body will protest to these new foreign substances.

The end result is that there will be arising a lot of diseases, essentially what we call “lifestyle diseases”.

So what does the Paleo diet stand for?

Healthy Fats

The Paleo Diet

Eating healthy fats is a big pillar of the Paleo diet. And mainly, because of the many studies of the effect of healthy fats, which indicate that you get fewer problems with eating healthy fats.

You will reduce the chances to get: obesity. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes.

Lean Proteins

Proteins are of vital importance to your body. Proteins are essential, for example, for the build-up of muscle tissue and cells.

In addition, proteins provide a feeling of fullness, so you automatically eat less by a ‘full’ feeling.

Fruit and vegetables

The Paleo Diet

We all know that fruits and vegetables are a very important source of minerals, vitamins and contain very strong antioxidants.

All of these substances will ensure that your body will work more efficiently, and so that you feel better.

By eating plenty of fruits and vegetables you will reduce significantly the chances of getting diabetes and cancer. (The great exception, which you can NOT eat in the Paleo diet is the Nightshade family. See below.)

NO Cereals

The Paleo Diet

Cereals, including all flour products, are unacceptable. Paleo sees corn as an edited and modified product.

At the Paleo-time we were hunters, and no farmers. So No to cereals!

NO milk or other (derived) milk

Also, dairy products, and all products derived from them, or you will naturally need a cow standing in the backyard.

But even this does not fit the Paleo-list!

Once again in The Paleo-time we were hunters, and no farmers with livestock.

NO fruits and vegetables from the nightshade family

The Paleo Diet

Although most products from the nightshade family have a very good reputation in the field of health, they are out of the question in the Paleo diet.

Examples include potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant.

NO processed products

This is actually the most difficult thing about the diet:

All the food that we know is in one way or another arrangement.

Fortunately, Paleo focuses on the severely refined products.

These include bread, pasta, biscuits, sweets, sugar and milk.

The claimed benefits of the Paleo Diet

If you absorb the above information well, then the advantages must be quite obvious.

You do not get processed, industrial products such as sugars and refined carbohydrates, so you’ll feel better in general.

The Paleo Diet

For example, participants in the diet have a clearer skin, fewer allergies and lose excess weight.

There are people who claim that they are happier and sleep better.

Also you what you get of the diet is improved resistance.

Paleo has the main advantage that by avoiding the processed products, the risk of all kinds of lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular diseases decrease sharply.

Needless to say this can have major benefits for your health and wellbeing.

The claimed disadvantages of the Paleo Diet

One of the major drawbacks of the Paleo diet is the fact that certain types of food should be completely banned.

 

Fortunately, you can adjust well to your food, at least if you can cook it yourself, but if you eat out or are live abroad temporarily, it will be quite difficult.

Another major drawback is the suitability for vegetarians as meat and fish one of the great pillars of the diet.

The Paleo Diet

Where many people have the most trouble with is avoiding the processed and refined products such as sugars.

Although sugar is indeed very bad for the body, it gets us literally brought up on that that sugar is good and that you have this “need”.

 

Believe me, there are more cases of sugar addiction than you think. Typically, a lot of people are unware of this fact…….

So is therefore Paleo the ideal diet? No, not at all!

Don’t get me wrong but I don’t condemn the diet. If you want to live healthier, and possibly want to lose weight, there is nothing wrong with the Paleo diet.

My problem is more in the whole concept around it.

Be honest now: If you assume a diet where you may only have to avoid food, sugars and healthy products, then you already have 90% of the Paleo diet.

There are some conditions which you need to bear in mind with the Paleo-story: namely, the conditions under which they lived:

  • The Paleo-time people got a lot more sunlight on the (bare) skin. Because of this they had normal levels of vitamin D. Because we are only at the office or in the car at this time, everyone has a chronic lack of vitamin D.
  • Prehistoric man went to sleep when it got dark, or when the fire died. Nowadays, with the aid of artificial light, we stay awake until we almost naturally fall asleep.
  • You can imagine the primitive man distributing meals throughout the day. They did not have the luxury of a refrigerator and Tupperware containers in which you can store a healthy snack. On the other hand, I can imagine that primitive man relied much on a combination of ‘relished’ berries and seeds they encountered on the way.
  • Primitive man was always active. All day hunting through, races and other sportive activities. This stands in stark contrast to today’s reality in which we travel by car or train, and spend all day behind a desk during our workday.

Conclusion

The Paleo diet is definitely healthy. Absolutely great.

But the whole basis of the Paleo-principle, for my taste contains to much hassles that you need to take into account.

And is very hard to hold on with in nowadays society…….

In the end if you want to live healthy, you should take action and make decisions for yourself that benefit you.

In some way that is what the Paleo diet stands for.
